Annual and Study Leave Procedures

Officer at least a month prior to the commencement of the period of leave. Annual leave is granted subject to approved arrangements for cover. All changes to the rota should be notified to the secretaries who type it and trainees should ensure that gaps in the rota are filled and that switchboard is aware of any sudden changes.
You will receive notification that leave is approved and confirmation of the balance of any outstanding leave in the current leave year. Application forms for annual leave can be obtained from the Medical Staffing Officer, Halton Hospital.
Clinics are generally booked many weeks in advance and it is vital for smooth and efylcient patient care that clinics are re-arranged well in advance. Junior doctors must therefore discuss leave with their supervising consultants and take responsibility for ensuring that clinics are cancelled in advance and re-arranged.
Your study leave entitlement is thirty days per annum, most of which is taken up by the MRCPsych Course. Further study leave is available for examinations and may be available for other courses (subject to approval by Postgraduate Clinical Tutor).
Absence through Sickness

If you are unable to attend for duty because of sickness, you must notify your Consultant and the Medical Staffing Officer, Halton Hospital before 10.00 am on the first day of absence. You must specify if you are likely to miss on-call or other urgent duties so that appropriate arrangements can be made.
A self certificate must be completed and forwarded to the Medical Staffing Officer, if the period of sickness extends beyond four days. For absences of over seven days a doctor’s note must be obtained and forwarded to the Medical Staffing Officer.
Under the statutory sick pay regulations, self certificates are the sole method of claiming sickness or injury benefit in respect of the first seven successive calendar days of every period of incapacity.
